Polymer brushes in motion (A05)

Subject Area Statistical Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Complex Systems, Soft and Fluid Matter, Biological Physics
Term from 2011 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 178321814

Cilia and flagella are slender cellular appendages whose regular beating patterns pumps fluids. In this project, we aim to build an in vitro ciliary carpet and to investigate the beating patterns, hydrodynamic interactions between beating cilia, their stability and energy efficiency, as well as the transport properties of the fluid. The main questions are how the individual cilia interact with the flow field generated by their neighbors and synchronize their beats for metachronal waves to emerge, and how the geometrical arrangement of the cilia, like spacing and beat direction of the array, determine the properties of metachronal waves and the transport of the surrounding fluid.
