This proposal is part of the Paketantrag “Physical Properties of Complex Metallic Alloys”, which is closely linked into the EC Network of Excellence “Complex Metallic Alloys”. Complex metallic alloys (CMAs) possess characteristic structural features, which directly determine various physical properties. In particular the cluster substructure has considerable influence on the electronic, magnetic and thermal properties, and leads, for example, to a negative temperature coefficient of the electrical conductivity although the materials contain only metallic elements. We will characterize the electronic, magnetic and thermal properties of various CMAs, which will with various degrees of complexity, structure, and constituting elements be produced by partners in the Paketantrag. Furthermore, as a direct consequence of the large unit cells, we expect unusual thin-film properties of CMA materials, in particular if the film thickness is comparable (or smaller) than the lattice parameters. We therefore plan to produce thin films of selected CMA phases and investigate their properties.
