The historical, critical edition project established in the subject of art history at the University of Trier is relevant to basic research in the humanities and aims to document all the court artists and craftsmen (= 518) working at the Trier Electoral court from 1629 to 1794 based on the sources, including documentation of their biographical data, their origins and the time they worked at court. These data (to be published as a reference work) are to present for the first time a fundamental description of the spectrum of skills represented at court and its relationship to the guild craftsmen. The examination of the artists personal environment and their finances is to convey the social position of the court artists / craftsmen. The evaluation of this mostly unprocessed archival material will represent a comprehensive examination of the artistic performance at a significant ecclesiastical princely court of the Early Modern Era.
