The main aim of the present project is to contribute to a better understanding of the geology of the southern continental part of the Cainozoic Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL), in particular to its precursor magmatic activity and structural control by its Precambrian basement. Specific objectives include the petrological and geochemical characterization of mafic (basaltic dykes) ultramafics (mantle peridotite xenoliths from maar deposits). We aim to place constraints on the evolution of the mantle source prior to the onset of Upper Tertiary to Recent volcanism at the Cameroon Line. As a side-aspect, we will evaluate the significance of Fe-Al ore deposits at the Bana Tertiary anorogenic complex for the conditions of magma formation and differentiation.
