Database data, maps, and mapping information form the backbone of ecological research at the landscape level. As proposed by the review panel of our large research consortium, the “Exploratories for large-scale and long-term functional biodiversity research”, this proposal summarizes the needs for such information of all initial and further contributing projects. In other words, this proposal summarizes needs already acknowledged by the review panel but not granted directly with the subprojects of the consortium. This enabled us in the current proposal to identify synergies and to minimize the overall costs by avoiding redundancies. We propose acquiring digital topographic maps at 1:10000 scale (DTK 10; larger scales are available for free), digital ortho-photographs, high resolution airborne imagery, and satellite images of the ASTER type. Moreover, we ask for student helpers and coverage of travel expenses to assist in ground-truthing remote sensing information and in mapping of land use surrounding the study plots of the exploratories where it is not possible via remote sensing. Furthermore, we ask for the software Geomatica V.10 to process DTK-data and ortho-photograph data, and ArcGIS and spatial analysis licenses for the digitization of the actual land use information and for synthesizing information from all subprojects. The information of the applied for data, maps, and mapping materials is essential for the success of all current subprojects of the biodiversity exploratories. Moreover, the material will be available for the new subprojects to join the consortium in early 2009.
