Cytosolic chaperones participate in the transfer of precursor proteins required for chloroplast function. Recent observations challenge the direct function in the delivery as a more direct influence on the preprotein stability is discovered. These principles are only rudimentary understood and have to be explored to understand the regulation of precursor transfer into chloroplasts. In this project we want to explore how the chaperone mediated degradation is integrated into the cellular signaling and how it is linked to photosynthetic performance of the chloroplasts. In addition, we aim at analyzing the relation between mRNA distribution and protein translocation, a theme largely discussed for the translocation into ER and mitochondria, but not yet explored for chloroplasts.
