The subject of this project is the experimental investigation of correlated electron systems in confined dimensions by means of new synchrotron radiation techniques. Synchrotron radiation based experiments allow examining electronic quantum behaviour in great details and at various energies. This is essential in order to develop a comprehensive microscopic understanding of complex electronic systems, where the physics is governed by diverse interactions on different energy scales. We plan to investigate the formation of electronic superlattices, the quasiparticle dynamics close to the Fermi level as well as collective charge excitations at higher energies. By focussing a combination of different experimental techniques on a specific scientific issue, the proposed research group will seek to provide new unprecedented insights into the physics of correlated electron systems.
