„The Group is involved in studies of the Earth s crust in regions of exceptional geological importance. It’s approach is to complement the range of traditional methods with as much and varied analytical data as can be extracted from a rock. This includes geochronological (at Freiberg: particle-dating, Ar-Ar, U-Pb, and Rb-Sr) but also temperature and pressure data. The Group conducts methodological research aimed at improving existing methods and extending the range of methods and data available to it. The acquisition of a high-end dispersive Microraman spectrometer would have impact on: (a) The development of the fission-track and U/Th-He methods and the development of new thermo-chronometers. This includes rapid/high-resolution determination of compositional variations and unit cell dimensions of the dated grains, the measurement of fission/recoil lattice deterioration and restoration of uranium and thorium bearing minerals on a geological time scale; (b) Automated mineral mapping in 3D; this provides an extensive database for the investigating of crystal-size distributions and grain orientations; (c) Identification of inclusions in minerals; aiding reconstruction of P-T-t paths in rocks; (d) Determination of the homogenization temperature and chemical variation of fluid inclusions; (e) Distinguishing feldspar varieties and investigating mineral zoning, providing essential supporting data for the interpretation of geochronological ages.“
