B6 aims to experimentally investigate the effects of bottom water variability and depletion of O2, NO3-, and NO2- on nitrogen loss and recycling pathways in the sediments off Peru. The second major aim is to determine the natural variability of the benthic-pelagic nutrient budget off Peru by quantifying benthic nutrient fluxes in combination with pelagic nutrient transport processes and fluxes in austral winter. Previous SFB 754 studies off Peru were carried out during austral summer. B6 will strongly complement our understanding of key contributing processes and major feedbacks controlling benthic pelagic nutrient inventories off Peru at different timescales.
