Project Details
A tracer release experiment (POSTRE) to quantify benthic-pelagic exchanges in the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), and constraining the age-spectrum of the OMZ with transient tracers (A03)
Subject Area
Oceanography
Term
from 2008 to 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 27542298
We will address three main science questions: 1) What are the pathways of exchange between the benthic boundary layer and the pelagic ocean in the Peruvian Oxygen Minimum Zone System? 2) What are the ventilation ages of the water masses in the Atlantic OMZ? 3) What is the effective horizontal exchange of oxygen between the OMZ and its surrounding oxygen rich waters in the eastern tropical North Atlantic? All three questions will be addressed using a combination of existing hydrographic data, SFB 754 model results and four targeted field campaigns.
