Precise quantification of localised charges on surfaces with charge force microscopy

The charge state of atom, molecules, metallic clusters, or nanoparticles at surfaces is one of the key parameters that determines reactivity and efficiency in a variety of applications. Consequently, a consistent quantitative determination of the charge state at the single-atomic scale is a strong requirement for further understanding of the fundamental physicochemical processes and continuous development of devices or catalysts. With this project, we aim for the development and for arriving at a physical understanding of charge force microscopy as a generally applicable quantitative technique that yields precise charge magnitudes for single atoms, molecules, and nanoscale objects. The project will use two reference system, one based on single molecules and one based on metallic nanoparticles, both adsorbed on an insulator surface, to unravel contributing parameters, to calibrate the method, and to ultimately apply the method to application-relevant systems.
