Ultrasonic welding is a suitable technology for joining multi-material composites with outstanding joint properties in a resource-saving manner. The use of ultrasonic welding in lightweight construction and in the electronics industry has been the subject of research for decades. The bonding mechanisms and the relationship between interface characteristics and joint strength are still largely unknown, as well as the deformation and damage behavior at the microstructural level. In this project, multi-material systems are therefore to be produced and comprehensively characterized with regard to their mechanical and microstructural properties. The knowledge gained will be transferred into finite element (FE) models in order to simulate the deformation and damage behavior depending on the interface geometry. This simulation is to be verified experimentally. For this purpose, a selected composite is to be subjected to in-situ loading in a computer tomograph and the observed deformation and damage behavior is to be compared with the simulation in order to develop an experimentally verified FE model for ultrasonically welded joints for the first time.
