Final Report Abstract

The CRC 629 Molecular Cell Dynamics started with the aim to strengthen connections between cell biology and developmental biology to foster the understanding of how intracellular movements are coupled to cellular movements. We have discussed our progress in regular annual meetings with colleagues from all over the world and over the years significantly strengthened the scientific environment in Münster fostering the development of focussed research structures. We are confident that the CRC 629 has accomplished his mission. We could publish a series of distinguished scientific results. These included the development of new imaging technologies and important studies on membrane and cytoskeleton dynamics in the transition phase from polar to migrating cells. Moreover, the comparison of the migratory behavior of different cell types in several animal species provided insights on evolutionary conserved mechanisms. The international scientific visibility and the attractiveness of the University of Münster greatly improved through the activities of the CRC 629. Several members of the CRC 629 were recruited to other universities and new colleagues could be integrated into the CRC 629. The manifold interactions with the CRC 629 sparked the development of additional successful initiatives such as the establishment of the excellence cluster called Cells in Motion. Within the excellence cluster, the original theme of the CRC 629 is placed into a broader context including other natural scientists and translational research of medically oriented colleagues. The CRC 629 thus acted as a structure-forming element within the University of Münster.
