SFB 540:  Model-based Experimental Analysis of Kinetic Phenomena in Fluid Multi-phase Reactive Systems

Subject Area Thermal Engineering/Process Engineering
Mathematics
Term from 1999 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5483677

The goal of the collaborative research centre is thedevelopment of a new methodology for the systematic modelingof kinetic phenomena in fluid multi-phase reactive systems ondifferent scales of size and detail. Therefore, activities so far conducted separately, such as high resoluion measurement techniques, modeling and simulation, estimation methods and model discrimination, are integrated into a one work process. This leads to an improved physical understanding and an accuratemodel. A great significance is attached to the systematic hypotheses validation using high resoluion measurements. The work process should be designed to be applicable in industry forroutine investigation of kinetic phenomena. The only way to guarantee a successful methodology development is to carry it out in interaction with difficult modeling problems. Experiencesfrom case studies are used to improve the techniques of each activity and to combine them into a broadly applicable and adaptable work process. Moreover, the generated models provide an improved basis for the model-based design of reactive separation processes and multi-phase reactors, leading a better usage of technical and economic resources.
