SFB 457:  Non-hierarchical Regional Production Networks

Collaborative research centre 457's objective is the scientific study of the visionary idea of non-hierarchical regional production networks. The idea says that in future entrepreneurs will provide their resources as smallest autonomous performance units, so called competence cells. Competence cells - each of them consisting of a human being with its individual competencies (characteristics, capabilities, willingness) and available resources (facilities, stocks, equipment) -- co-operate temporarily in networks to fulfil a customer's order. The collaborative research centre 457 works on the definition of the competence cell and explorations of the genesis and the operation of non-hierarchical production networks, the feedback resulting from cross-linking competence cells and the development of production networks towards regional competence centres. The research is done by twelve project segments in four departments.
