SFB 253:  Fundamentals of Space Plane Design

Subject Area Thermal Engineering/Process Engineering
Term from 1989 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5475133

The collaborative research centre is concerned with fundamentals of space plane design. The research concentrates on design analysis (overall design, structure, engine) and on experimental and numerical aerodynamics of the vehicles and the propulsion system. The basic space transportation system consists of two reusable stages. The delta-winged first stage is equipped with an air-breathing propulsion system, the second stage with a rocket engine. The research is mainly concerned with physical models of the flow and their experimental and numerical simulation. Important topics are the external flow at the vehicle and the internal flow in inlet and nozzle. Tests with models of the vehicles and their components are performed in several wind tunnels ranging from low speeds up to Mach number 7. The test results help to understand flow phenomena and to verify numerical results. A detailed knowledge of flow phenomena is required for the prediction of pressure distributions, lift, drag, propulsion efficiency, and heating rates.
