SPP 1140:  Middleware for Self-organizing Infrastructures in Networked Mobile Systems

Subject Area Computer Science, Systems and Electrical Engineering
Term from 2002 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5471724

This program aims at developing methods and techniques to provide middleware for self-organizing networked mobile systems (multi-hop ad hoc networks). Such systems are characterized by high mobility as well as by context and location dependence. In order to provide enhanced services in such environments, a flexible and scalable middleware solution is needed. Furthermore, the middleware should be able to adapt itself to the dynamically changing network characteristics. Therefore, inter-layer interactions are essential. Throughout this program proper architectures for such systems will be developed. These architectures are not necessarily based on the well-known client/server paradigm but rather follow the peer-to-peer principle. This requires new structuring principles for services and applications that especially address the high requirements considering flexibility.Within the framework of this program, some research projects address among other things enhanced routing protocols for systems with high mobility. Thereby, information such as position, context and quality of service are utilized. With respect to group communication, peer-to-peer techniques as well as multicast routing are considered. A number of projects address service location and management in ad hoc systems. This issue is addressed with respect to communication systems as well as with respect to information systems. Considering applications, e-learning (e.g., homework) in ad hoc environments is addressed in several projects. Furthermore, some projects deal with the development of middleware for sensor-based networks which, for example, could be used in case of a disaster in order to collect environmental data. Resource utilization and power capacity are critical parameters that have to be addressed in such networks. In order to reach the goals of this program, the competences of the different projects are bundled and a tight cooperation is encouraged by workshops focussing on specific topics.
