FOR 493:  Fluid-Structure Interaction: Modelling, Simulation, Optimisation

Subject Area Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Mathematics
Physics
Thermal Engineering/Process Engineering
Term from 2003 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5469913

The major objective of the research unit is the systematic andcoordinated development and investigation of numerical methods forthe robust and efficient simulation of fluid-structure interaction.A large number of examples of such problems can be found in variousdisciplines. In the field of engineering there can be mentioned, for instance, civil engineering (bridges, sks scrapers, flexible roofs, off shore platforms,...), mechanical engineering (valves, pumps, airfoils, ship propellers,...), process engineering (stirrer, extruders, injection systems,...) or medicine technique (artificial heart valves, blood vessels,...). The realistic transient simulation of such processes is rather challenging with respect to the numerical techniques and computer capacities. In addition to the effort resulting form the combination of structural and fluid mechanical computations the interaction brings in a variety of complex numerical, informatical and mechanical questions, which require intensive research efforts to answer them. This comprises questions of the adequate consideration of the dynamic and nonlinear interaction itself, the capabilities of partitioned solution approaches, the appropriateness of established methods fromstructural and flow side, the robustness and efficiency of the methods, the adequate description of complex geometries and its changes or the topic of a flexible software environment for such problems.
