SPP 1057:
Spanen metallischer Werkstoffe mit hohen Geschwindigkeiten
Subject Area
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term
from 1998 to 2003
Project identifierDeutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5468908
Project Description
New tool materials, high performance spindle systems, and intelligent driving systems make possible a drastic increase in the cutting speed for machine tools. High speed cutting can lead to enhanced surface qualities and lower production costs. It is therefore of major interest for the aircraft industry, die and mould manufacture, the production of jet propulsion engines, as well as for a wide range of applications in the automotive industry.Despite of this, the scientific basics of high speed cutting are not well known. The priority programme 1057 "Metal Cutting at High Cutting Speeds" focuses on the chip forming mechanisms applying experimental analysis and simulation tools. The material behaviour as well as the energy dissipation are the aims of the investigations. Based on these results a model for the chip forming zone is being established.
