This project aims to develop a robust, low-carbon binder concept suitable for a wide range of manufacturing methods, using calcined clay and limestone as supplementary cementitious materials to create blended cements with less than 40% clinker. The low clinker content results in a lower early strength, which is compensated by mild alkaline activation using a suitable accelerator and retarder combination. Additionally, we will explore the effects of CO2 curing on early strength to further improve the CO2 balance. The gathered data will be used to develop thermodynamic and rheological models for performance-based binder design, focusing on the fresh and hardened properties of low-CO2, carbon-reinforced concrete.
