Elucidating principles of kidney and organ involvement in emerging viral infections (A04)

We previously identified SARS-CoV-2 as a multiorgan- and renotropic virus, associated with an increase of renal disease. To systematically unravel the pathophysiological role of virus-tissue interactions, we will use our tissue collection of COVID-19 autopsy kidneys to molecularly define the in vivo tissue response pattern, infect human kidney organoids to develop a spatially and temporally resolved map of SARS-CoV-2 action and develop tissue- and pathway-specific therapeutic interventions as roadmaps for the next generation of emerging viral infections ("Disease X").
