In this project, we want to study optically induced, ultrafast magnetization processes in the vicinity of magnetic phase transitions of ultrathin films, multilayers and nanostructures with high lateral and temporal resolution. The studies will be performed on the one hand, by magneto-optical scanning near-field microscopy modified for time-resolved studies. This technique has been successfully applied to static measurements in the past. On the other hand, we shall apply time-resolved photoemission-electron microscopy at a synchrotron-radiation facility. Both SNOM and PEEM experiments will use the pump-probe technique, where the magnetic ground state is excited by a femtosecond laser pulse, and transient magnetization changes are measured either by a delayed second laser pulse or by an x-ray pulse.
