Studies of complex supramolecular spin clusters and spin chains in high magnetic fields

Our aim is to exploit the static and dynamic magnetic properties of multi center spin clusters and one-dimensional spin systems with additional degrees of freedom which are specifically found in molecular magnetism. The complexity addressed in this project may arise from geometric frustration of the magnetic exchange interaction, its interplay with local crystal field anisotropy or a variation/alternation of the effective spin degeneracy by changing the element of the magnetic center or its charge state. The diversity of the problems specific to molecular magnets requires the application of different experimental techniques to investigate the delicate relationship between various degrees of freedom. In this project different magnetic resonance techniques ranging from muon spin relaxation (µSR), Mössbauer spectroscopy and broad band NMR to high frequency ESR will be combined with the measurements of the static magnetic properties. The unique combination of high frequencies up to 1 THz and extremely strong magnetic fields up to 60 Tesla will open a new avenue in the studies of magnetic supramolecular systems. The high frequency ESR and high field magnetization measurements will enable to explore the spectrum of the electronic energy states and to probe a number of fundamental low-energy excitations in this class of materials. µSR, NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopy will be used to examine phases with static magnetic order and the low frequency excitations of long range interacting systems.
