Discontinuous sedimentary evolution of the Keuper (Triassic), Central European Basin (Lithostratigraphy, unconformities, cyclic and sequence stratigraphy, paleotectonics)

Subject Area Palaeontology
Term from 2004 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5428976

Formal Keuper lithostratigraphy with diachronous facties units that is commonly used outside of Germany is almost useless for a detailed basin evaluation. One of the main targets of the project is to generate a framework of homogenized, quasi-isochronous, lithological (allo-stratigraphy) units and associated unconformities form Poland to England, similar to the one that has been established recently in Germany (Beutler et al. 2004). In addition the pronounced pattern of hierarchial cycles in outcrops, cores and well logs will be used to establish a high-resolution stratigraphic subdivision of formations. The sequence stratigraphic (baselevel) framework of the Keuper will be revised according to the new results of cyclicity and unconformities. Subsidence curves and subsidence (isopach and paleotectonic) maps will line out periods of different subsidence and sysedimentary faulting as well as the variable stress conditions involved. Expected results are: - Homogenized stratigraphic subdivision and cross sections from Poland to England, - high-resolution stratigraphic subdivision in Germany and Poland, - proper stratigraphic position of known (and possible unknown) unconformities, - amount of erosion involved, - establishment of thickness variations in realtion to synsedimentary tectonics and halotectonics, - stratigraphic positions of Keuper salt deposited in areas of high subsidence, - establishment of spatial facies variations, - revision of sequence stratigraphic (baselevel) framework, - establishment of periods of variable subsidence and sysedimentary faulting as well as definition of variable stress conditions involved.
