A-B block copolymers with block lengths in the range that induces nanophase-separation with the formation of cylindrical domains of polymer A in the matrix of polymer B will be prepared as thin films on solid substrates. Solvent-annealing will allow for the generation of patterns with a high degree of long range positional and orientational order. The resulting regular arrays of cylindrical domains with (tunable) diameters and separation distances in the nanometer range, and oriented normal to the substrate surface, will be used as templates for the fabrication of arrays of nanorods or nanowires from different types of materials, including (noble) metals, oxides, semiconductors, or conducting/redox-active polymers. MOCVD and wet chemical protocols for this growth of nanorod arrays will be employed and evaluated. Of the wide range of interesting physical properties that these nano arrays have, we will focus on their optical (linear, nonlinear and integrated) properties with an emphasis on surface plasmon optical investigations, as well as on using the structures for the diffractive optics. Additionally, the high surface area of these arrays will be used to generate binding matrices for bioaffinity studies covalently coupling ligands (peptides or oligonucleotides) via silane- (for SiO2) or thiol- (for Au, Ag GaAs) derivatization.
