Multiple scales analysis of precipitating clouds: Feasibility study for selected cloud types

Applicants Professor Dr. Dieter Etling; Professor Dr.-Ing. Rupert Klein
Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Term from 2004 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5426006

Project Description

In this project a scale analysis of the full equations for the moist atmosphere including bulk representations of phase changes and precipitation will be performed. Using the method of multiple scales asymptotics, reduced sets of equations for simplified prototype stratiform- and cumulus clouds will be derived. These reduced equations can be used (i) as a guideline in formulating subgrid models of cloud formation and precipitation in large scale numerical weather prediction models, and (ii) to define analytically motivated test problems for computational codes that solve the full governing equations with bulk microphysics parameterizations.
