Sedimentation processes on Walvis Ridge - correlation of high resolution seismic records with ODP Leg 208 physical properties data

Subject Area Geophysics
Term from 2003 to 2007
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5411646

The ODP proposal 559-Full, "Early Cenozoic Extreme Climates: The Walvis Ridge Transect" (Zachos et al). will be realized during the upcoming ODP Leg 208 (08.03. - 09.05.03). The main objectives of ODP Leg 208 are extreme climatic conditions in the Paleogene, dating utilizing astronomical cycles, and the reconstruction of the paleoceanographic development. Primary targets are the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (55,5 Ma), the Early Ecocene Climatic Optimum (52-50 Ma), and the Early Oligocene Glacial Maximum (33.4 Ma). Meteor Cruise M49/1 in early 2001 was the main seismic pre-site survey for ODP Leg 208. The seismic data in combination with old DSDP data were the basis for selecting new locations for the upcoming ODP Leg 208. In the framework of this proposal we plan to combine the seismic data with the new drilling results through calculation of synthetic seismograms. These data will be used to analyze the seismic signatures of the target reflectors and to map their spatial distribution. We also want to investigate other features identified in the new drill sites, such as the influence of currents on the sedimentation as well as the spatial distribution of sedimentation rates and hiatuses, which shall lead to a characterization of depositional processes on Walvis Ridge.
