It is proposed to develop a laser-driven, femtosecond, keV x-ray source of high average x-ray flux. Such x-ray pulses will open up new regimes of study in lattice dynamics using elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering. Intense optical excitation will be used to drive strong lattice excitations leading to substantial excursions of the lattice atoms from their equilibrium position. These investigations will provide new information on the energy relaxation in laser-excited solids and shed light on specific coherent lattice excitations that may eventually lead to structural changes of the material.
