Studies on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of molecule-based magnetic solids by means of X-ray spectroscopic techniques

Subject Area Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2002 to 2005
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5368634

The drive to miniaturization has induced a high interest in the preparation and investigation of molecule-based compounds. In the frame of this project versatile spectroscopic techniques like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy (XAS/XES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) are to be employed for investigations of molecule-based magnetic solids. We will experimentally probe element-specific occupied and unoccupied states in the valence band region as well as deep-core states whose spectral features reflect magnetic properties. Together with an appropriate computational approach, we expect to establish a clear correlation between the electronic structure and magnetic properties. The goal of this project is to deduce relevant properties which govern the exchange interaction between magnetic orbitals in metal-organic compounds.
