... We propose a detailed stable carbon- and oxygen isotope study of authigenic minerals in the Zechstein carbonate rocks. In combination with burial and temperature histories, the results will allow to define their carbon source(s) and infer reaction temperatures of diagenetic (carbonate-forming) processes. Moreover, we try to relate the late(st) (i.e. youngest) authigenic carbonate mineralisations to the gas (molecular and isotope) composition in the reservoirs. New analytical techniques (micro-scaled sample preparation for isotope analyses of carbonates by laser ablation) and carbon isotope analyses of gases (CO2, CH4) from inclusions in carbonate minerals will be used. If the variations of the CO2 sources during rock history are known, gas compositions and gas quantities can be modelled using basin modelling software.
