The specific aims of the proposed studies are: 1. To evaluate differences in the mortality of endotoxin tolerant and normal rats after gut I/R. 2. To determine if endotoxin tolerance alters gut permeability and motility after gut I/R. 3. To evaluate differences in the systemic immune response between endotoxin tolerant and normal individuals after gut I/R. 4. To evaluate local changes of the gut's cytokine response after ischemia with and without endotoxin tolerance. 5. To determine the relationship between NFkB content in cell nucleus fractions of different gut cells and cytokine response after gut ischemia and evaluate changes during endotoxin tolerance.
