Transkriptional regulators of jasmonate-induced alkaloid biosynthetic genes in Eschscholzia californica

Alkaloids are a class of physiologically active secondary metabolites that can be accumulated in plants and plant cell cultures in response to wounding and/or elicitor treatment. The activation of the benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid biosynthetic pathway in a variety of plant species proceeds by transcriptional activation via signal transducers that are lipid membranederived octadecanoids (12-oxo-phytodienoic acid / jasmonic acid). In the Madagascar periwinkle Catharanthus roseus, methyl jasmonate-inducible AP2-domain transcription factors (ORCAs) have recently been identified that demonstrate the ability to regulate genes of monoterpenoid indole alkaloid biosynthesis. It is a goal of this proposal to learn more about the role of this type of transcription factor in benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid biosynthesis gene activation. The system that we propose to investigate is that of methyl jasmonate-induced alkaloid biosynthetic gene activation in cell suspension cultures of the California poppy Eschscholzia californica.
