Project Details
Causal pathways of Arctic-midlatitude interactions (D06*)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
since 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 268020496
This project will make progress in understanding and quantifying the causal influence of Arctic amplification on midlatitude weather and climate extremes. Several proposed mechanisms will be selected from the literature and will be systematically tested using both model and observation data. In particular, large model ensembles will be used to understand the role of state-dependencies and natural variability. Finally, the plausible implications of a changing Arctic for future weather and climate extremes will be estimated and described based on the quantified causal effects and using future sea ice and climate scenarios.
