Usage of Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasmas in longitudinal high-frequency welding to realize oxygen-free manufacturing conditions (T01*)

Subject Area Joining and Separation Technology
Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 394563137

Project Description

Within the transfer project and in cooperation with the application partner (Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH), a DBD-plasma treatment unit, designed as a plasma jet, will be implemented in the heating zone during longitudinal high-frequency welding of tubes. In this way, oxides present on the strip edges and other impurities shall be removed without additional energy input and reoxidation will be suppressed. Furthermore, the effects on the welding process will be analyzed fundamentally. The overriding objective is to improve the weld seam quality by reducing defects in the joining zone and to expand the product portfolio that can be processed in a resource-efficient manner.
