Genetic linkage and association studies in migraine with aura

Subject Area Human Genetics
Term from 2001 to 2007
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5467992

The primary aim of this investigation is to define a large and clinically exactly diagnosed patient population suffering from hereditary migraine with aura. This task will be performed by the "Schmerzklinik Kiel". Based on the diagnostic criteria of the "International Headache Society" and the ICD-10 each participant is assigned to the matching subtype of migraine with aura: migraine with typical aura, migraine with prolonged aura, familiar hemiplegic migraine, basilar migraine, migraine with acute onset aura or migraine aura without headache. The patients´ history, trigger factors and the effectiveness of migraine drugs for acute and prophylactic treatment are recorded during the clinical examination. The accumulated data is archived in a data base for further analyses. For the genetic studies DNA will be extracted from the blood of both migraine sufferers and healthy members of the selected migraine families. Immortalised cell lines will be produced for DNA/RNA-extraction. Analysing genetic polymorphisms the "Institut für Humangenetik der Universität Bonn" will try and match candidate genes and regions with the migraine phenomenology recorded. [...] In summary, this genetic investigation aims at the identification of possible molecular mechanisms of migraine.
