ICON (ICOsahedral Non Hydrostatic) model is a unified modeling framework for weather, climate and environmental modeling applications. The main development objective is to exploit the synergies between weather forecasting, climate simulation, environmental prediction, process studies, and re-analysis, and to jointly develop and maintain a comprehensive, seamless, globally as well as regionally applicable modeling system for these application areas. Development and maintenance of such a flexible modeling system require an increasing effort in the areas of software design and optimal use of high-performance computing systems. The overall objective of this project is to enhance the interoperability and flexibility of the code in order to make it more usable and accessible for the research community. To achieve this, we 1) combine the community interface and coupler software that will ease diagnostics, I/O, coupling with ML and third-party modules. 2) Fully modularize physics and dynamics code in order to facilitate scientific use and further development of the code.
