The need to apply for the magnetometer is driven by the scientific projects of the applicant, but also by the requirements of other research groups of the Department of Chemistry. For the Department of Chemistry and in particular for the research groups of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry it is of utmost importance to be able to carry out in house measurements. Beside of routine characterizations of magnetic properties it is necessary to investigate magnetic exchange phenomena at low temperature and with a high sensitivity. The investigated class of compounds encompass inorganic coordination compounds as well as solid-state materials. These compounds contain transitions metals, rare earth elements and, increasingly, the actinides thorium and uranium. Currently, the investigation of the latter metals is strongly intensified in the department of chemistry. The magnetometer will be mainly used for research purposes; however, also the education of chemists will be strengthened by using the device in special practical courses and in the research preparing Bachelor and Master theses. The configuration of the device is chosen in a way that it is complementary to the magnetometers in the neighbouring Department of Physics, so that beneficial synergy is reached.
