Subject Area Ancient History
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 394775490

Project Description

This project investigates the contribution of subaltern groups to the administration of the late Roman state. Drawing on petitions, acclamations, imperial pronouncements and literary sources, it analyzes how emperors of the late third to early sixth centuries harnessed the attention of broader sections of the population for their own ends. What role did non-elites play in governing the strong state of Late Antiquity and in monitoring its officials?
