The objective of this research project is the production of an etymological dictionary of the nominal stems found in the Nuristani languages, a group of related languages spoken in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which occupies an unclear but unique historical position within the Indo-Iranian language family. The etymological analysis of the Nuristani lexicon and its relation to that of its closest relatives (Old Iranian, Old Indo-Aryan) can contribute to the clarification of this unique position and illuminate the prehistory of the Indo-Iranian languages within the larger Indo-European family.
