In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and micro-MRI (MRI), the lack of signal and of contrast often are the limiting factors in medical diagnosis. Production of nuclear hyperpolarization can overcome this problem. To this end, we aim to introduce the solid-state photo-CIDNP effect into MRI. The solid-state photo-CIDNP (photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization) effect occurs in light-induced transient spin correlated radical pairs in, e.g., photosynthetic reaction centers and in flavoproteins. These molecular agents, converting light into nuclear hyperpolarization, will be applied as contrast agent in MRI studies.
