The proteasome is a large molecular machinery for degradation of proteins. It is localized in the cytosol, but also in the nucleus. The mechanisms that facilitate and regulate nuclear import are poorly understood. We found that Akirin2 dynamically associates with the proteasome during import. By using structural and biophysical approaches we aim to characterize nuclear import complexes and dissect the underlying mechanisms in transport of large cargo.
