This project continues work begun in 1995 on the comparative intonation of Standard German, Swiss German, British English, American English, Standard Colloquial Bengali, and East Bengali. We have been building a sizable database consisting above, supplemented by additional recordings in languages with related phenomenon, including Hindi, Turkish and Romanian. Our research goals as given in the Erstantrag 1995 and Verlängerungsanträge 1996 and 1998 remain essentially unchanged. These include the establishment of an intonational lexicon for each dialect, with contours represented as abstract, phonological tunes, and the characterization of rules of phonological phrasing and phrasal prominence. In the final year of the project we plan to conduct production and perception experiments.
