Mammalian cell culture biochemical engineering has been critical to the development of bioreactor and bioprocess technology for recombinant protein production. More recently, there has been rapidly increasing interest in cell culture for medical tissue engineering, cellular therapy and gene therapy. Research in the group of Prof. J. M. Piret is targeted at optimizing the design and operation of stirred suspension and high cell density processes. By increasing the fundamental understanding of these bioreactor devices, the proposed research should accelerate their development and optimizion both for recombinant protein production and for the emerging medical cell culture applications. This research should provide a high qualitiy multidisciplinary training environment in biochemical engineering and applied biological sciences.
