Reflecting on Tolerance is philosophical and reflective project with the role of monitoring and analysing the operationalisation of the Guiding Model‘s concept of tolerance in the course of research conducted in the Research Unit “The Difficulty and Possibility of Tolerance: The Multifaceted Challenges of the Concept and Practice of Tolerance”. As such, the project has two objects of research, one, the research activity, its methodologies and practices, in the Research Unit itself and, two, selected human scientific theories of tolerance, social cohesion, and inclusivity. First, in the monitoring of research activity, the project will work with a Kuhnnian understanding of research as structured by paradigms. In joint reflection with colleagues, the project will examine the diverse case studies and historical contexts studied in the other projects of the Research Unit, compare and contrast the possibly diverse paradigms, conceptual commitments, and causal or other explanatory claims made in the operationalisations of the Guiding Model. Second, alongside the reflective monitoring of research activity, the project will engage with selected human scientific theory for two purposes. On the one hand, the aim is to compare and contrast the philosophical project of tolerance as a prescriptive moral concept and duty with the possibly more descriptive accounts of historical and other practical tolerance processes. On the other hand, the project will consult selected human scientific theory, among others, anthropological theory of non-modern social cohesion and inclusivity, in order to be equipped to understand tolerance processes and the operationalisation of the Guiding Model in non-modern context studied in other projects of the Research Unit. Through all of these activities, the project aims at fostering scientific reflectivity, objectivity and interdisciplinarity in the Research Unit’s work and beyond.
