The trans-crustal magmatic nature of the Ivrea-Verbano Zone (IVZ) in the Italian Alps is one of the most complete sections of the continental crust. The IVZ archives dynamic open-system igneous processes across the continental lithosphere, and thus, provides an exceptional opportunity to compare high-pressure melt differentiation and melt – rock interaction experiments with natural drill core samples recovered from Drilling the Ivrea-Verbano zonE (DIVE). This proposal focuses on (i) the experimental determination of the differentiation pathway (liquid line of descent) of carbonatite magmas at pressure-temperature conditions equivalent to the upper mantle to crust transition as well as on (ii) the chemical re-equilibration dynamics between carbonatite melts and upper mantle / lower crustal lithologies. The results of the proposed research project will directly assist in petrological interpretation of the recovered drill core samples during the first phase of the DIVE campaign.
