Project Details
Stratigraphy and tectonic overprint of carbonate and drift deposits in the south-western Mediterranean STRATEC (M69/1)
Applicant
Professor Dr. Christian Hübscher
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science, Oceanography and Climate Research
Term
from 2007 to 2012
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 51359786
The final goals of this project are: 1) To establish a seismo-stratigraphic framework for Late- Quaternary carbonate deposits in the almost siliciclastic free settings at the Alboran Ridge, Oran Bay, and south-western Mallorca. 2) To reconstruct the prevailing and ancient oceanographic setting on the basis of drift deposits in all working areas. 3) To investigate gas traps in Late-Miocene carbonates and migration paths into the Pliocene-Quaternary overburden south-west of Mallorca. 4) To analyze neotectonic activity off Bolonia Bay, north and south of the Alboran Ridge, and off Oran in order to unravel its impact on the sedimentary succession in terms of fault pattern and mass wasting. This will be achieved by means of seismic and hydroacoustic data Interpretation collected during the cruise M69/1 (Western Mediterranean Sea) in September 2006. The seismic data have been recorded by a highly sophisticated 144-channel digital streamer System. During the first period the working program aims on the processing and Interpretation. Advanced processing methods like CRS-stacking, NIP-tomography and pre-stack depth migration will be applied in order to optimize the imaging. The Interpretation will be carried out in 2D and 3D.
