This project is part of the Meteor 68/3 cruise in July/August 2006 off the coast of Mauretania and aims at exploring the importance of the bacterial genus Roseobacter in an eastern Tropical Atlantic upwelling area. By using molecular biological techniques such as hybridisation with oligonucleottde probes (CARD-FISH) and DNA-fingerprinting (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis and Sequencing) it will investigate the small-scale distribution and heterogeneity of this important bacterial cluster and focus on the analysis of experiments to characterize the ecological potentials of Roseobacter in the chlorophyll maximum off western Africa, its responses to shifts in competition, predation as well as to changes in light conditions. Following an integrated approach, this study will combine the evaluation of manipulation experiments onboard and the investigation of field samples and their correlation with complex in situ data sets on environmental variables.
