Project Details
Development of a holistic geometrical and process model for abrasive flow machining
Subject Area
Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term
since 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 508887889
Abrasive flow machining is a process that transports a mixture of highly viscous carrier medium and abrasive particles inside a workpiece. This leads to a machining of the whole surface contacted by the medium. Experiments and iteration steps are still necessarry to plan the application of abrasive flow machining because of insufficient information about the process effects. This shortcomings are the motivation for the research on chip formation, friction and the influence of abrasive medium wear as well as its impact on the geometry to develop a model based prognosis. Preliminary studies proved that it is necessary for the understanding of the complex interaction of the medium and the geometry to develop a holistic geometrical understanding by connecting macro- and microstructures in one system, develop new parameters and new strategies to measure the surfaces. The project aim is the derivation of a holistic process model based on the investigated process effects and the new geometrical description and verification methods for the prediction of effects.
