Materials with discontinuities on many scales (B09*)

Subject Area Mathematics

Project Description

The goal of this project is the modeling and mathematical analysis of the onset and propagation of delamination and fracture, which form evolving discontinuities in solids on multiple scales. Inspired by geological observations we shall consider hierarchies of fracture networks ranging from large scales down to micro-scales. Using variational approaches and analytical tools for nonlinear, nonsmooth partial differential equations and homogenization theory, the aim is to deduce effective limit models as well as good approximative models reducing the geometric complexity.
