The upgrade of the ion implanter "Romeo" will enable the involved research groups to carry out a new spectrum of implantation experiments. The focus will be the targeted modification of the optical properties of modern (quantum) materials and nanostructures. This ranges from the realization of light centers based on lanthanides or transition metals in semiconductors, via the manipulation of the dielectric function of dielectrics, to the synthesis of new quantum emitters in diamond and 2D materials. These topics are at the center of many research projects as well as two coordinated DFG research programs at the optics-location Jena, a collaborative research center (SFB 1375 "NOA") and an international graduate school (IRTG 2675 "Meta-Active"), so that these will be significantly strengthened with the requested upgrade. The implanter upgrade will result in three new features. (a) A sputter ion source with appropriate power supplies will be purchased and integrated. This will enable high ion currents of many new elements that were previously inaccessible. These include, in particular, high-melting (transition) metals and lanthanides. (b) The new high-voltage terminal to be purchased will be equipped with new types of lenses, so that low ion energies will become accessible. Together with the sputter source, it will then be possible to irradiate samples over the entire relevant energy range with almost all elements of the periodic table at high ion fluences. This flexibility will open up new fields of research for all working groups in the future. (c) The system will be fully computer controlled. Not only will this new feature significantly increase efficiency and operation time, but it will also enable fast switching between elements and energies, allowing for complex element and depth profiles that were previously unfeasible. Instead of purchasing a new implanter at high costs, usable components of the existing implanter (acceleration tube & beam line) should continue to be used. The main use of the system will be proportionately carried out by four groups from the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) Jena, which are based at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. In principle, however, the system will be made available for all groups of the FSU, as was already the case in the past. In particular, the upgraded implanter will enable various new interdisciplinary collaborations between the groups using it. Overall, the scientific spectrum of the FSU Jena at the interface between the two focal research areas on optics and materials science will be significantly expanded and strengthened.
